I've been hearing people rave about Akron/Family for a good while now, and I think I'm finally starting to understand what people find so exciting about them. Their self-titled album was mostly mellow, folky type stuff (quite pretty in its own right) but this new split CD with Angels of Light captures the bristling energy and joyful crescendos that their live show is apparently known for. "Moment" opens with almost a full minute of swirling guitar noise and crashing cymbals before transitioning into an epic sing-along of sorts. It's a good example of how much ground even just one of their songs can cover. Akron/Family play Over The Top Fest in Toronto on January 11th with Final Fantasy and the Great Lake Swimmers. Listen to more songs over at Young God Records.
