In the tradition of such candy-coated cover bands as The Mini Pops, Kidz Bop, and the recent Devo re-incarnation Dev2.0, comes Brats on the Beat, a cover album featuring Ramones songs that have been "kiddified". What does that mean? Well, it basically involves playing the original songs note for note, but with the addition of a group of kids singing along to the chorus! In an attempt to maintain some credibility, Go Kart Records recruited a number of real "authentic" punk rockers to take up lead vocals on these songs, including Jim Lindberg of Pennywise, Jack Grisham of TSOL, and Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio.
Putting aside my initial cynicism about this project, I have to admit that, although gimmicky, the album is pretty infectious, and proves that the Ramones really are fun for kids of all ages. That said, I'm still a little disappointed about the absence of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", not to mention the album's titular track. I guess those songs are for Mommy and Daddy's ears only.
