After last year's Drum's Not Dead, I wondered if Liars would ever go back to the art rock vibe that I loved from their first album They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top. While I enjoyed Drum's Not Dead, I still felt like the album was a going to be an anomaly from the rest of their work, and the band would go back to experimenting with many different sounds. To no surprise, lead singer Angus Andrew recently announced on the band's blog that the new self-titled album would be a more back-to-normal album, with a "chilled out vibe." Surprisingly, that's actually a good description of the new album. The album has a definite stoner rock vibe to it compared to their earlier work, but also has the heavy percussion and fuzzed out sound of Drum's Not Dead. Perhaps the band's friendship with Deerhunter has rubbed off on Liars, and while Liars are famous for encouraging Deerhunter to stay together, it seems like Deerhunter has inspired Liars to reinvent themselves, and create an awesome new album. Definitely check out "Houseclouds."
